What is Methyl Folate (Metafolin®)?

Methyl Folate is the active form of folate, readily available for human body to use, especially during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects (NTD) in the fetus

Methylfolate for Maternal Nutrition

Methylfolate increases blood folate levels to a greater extent than folic acid. Metafolin® is better than folic acid because methyl folate can be readily used by the body. Folic acid is absorbed by gut and passes into portal vein uniformly, leaving behind unmetabolized folic acid (UMFA). UMFA accelerated cognitive decline, reduce natural killers of toxicity, reduction of immune system to kill off malignant or premalignant cells.

Up to 75% of Asia population has mutation in MTHFR, a gene which control the enzyme in converting folic acid to Methyl Folate, causing unmetobolized folic acid to be found in the body

Metafolin overcomes this gene mutation by making methyl folate readily available.

Up to 75% of people in the world may not be able to convert folic acid.
Metafolin® increases plasma folate more effectively than folic acid.

Folate needs increase during pregnancy  and lactation and deficiency can result in:

Women of childbearing age should  ensure adequate folate levels at least 4 weeks before conception.

The neural tube, a crucial structure that develops into the brain and spinal cord, completes its closure around the 21st day after conception. However, due to the prevalence of unplanned pregnancies, many women may not be consuming adequate amounts of folate during this critical period. This deficiency significantly raises the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs). Methylfolate, a more bioavailable form of folate, is absorbed and utilized by the body more efficiently than folic acid and withouth expose to unmetabolized folic acid. It can rapidly increase folate levels in the blood, potentially reducing the risk of NTDs. (Obeid, Nutrients, 2020 doi: 10.3390/nu12123623)

Several studies have shown that too much folic acid increases risk for cognitive development in children.

1. Use of folic acid exceeding the upper limit (>=1000 mcg/d) during the periconception period was associated with lower levels of cognitive development in children aged 4-5 year (Desiree, Am J Clin Sutr, 2017 doi: 10.3945/ajcn.117.152769)

2. Too much folic acid increases risk for reduction in psychomotor development in children. High dosages of folic acid supplementation (>=5000 mcg/d) were associated with a substantial reduction in psychomotor development in children at 1 year of age. (Desiree, JAMA Pediatr. 2014 Nov)

3. Too much folic acid increases risk of AUTISM spectrum disorder, with 566 children participated, 92 autism cases were found. American women consume folic acid >800mcg/d, leading to high UMFA (>50nmol/L) in maternal plasma and infant cord blood. High UMFA in cord blood is assocated with increased risk of autsim spectrum disorder. (Raghavan, Am J Clin Nutr 2020 Nov)

4. Higher insulin resistance in children born to mothers with higher gestational folate levels. (Krishnaverni, Diabetologia 2014 Jan)
